Turbinate Reduction: When Swollen Turbinates Block Your Breathing

Enlarged turbinates are a frequently overlooked cause of a stuffy nose. When they stay swollen, they can block airflow even when the septum is straight — and turbinate reduction can help.

What turbinates do

Turbinates are structures inside the nose that warm and humidify air. When chronically enlarged — from allergies or irritation — they narrow the airway and cause persistent congestion.

How reduction works

Turbinate reduction gently shrinks the excess tissue to open the airway while preserving enough turbinate to keep the nose functioning normally. Preserving function is key — over-reduction is avoided.

Often combined

Turbinate reduction is frequently done alongside a septoplasty when both are contributing to blocked breathing.

Frequently asked questions

Will I still be able to feel airflow after?

Careful, conservative reduction preserves turbinate function while opening the airway.

Is it painful?

Most patients tolerate it well; your surgeon reviews recovery.

Is it permanent?

Results are generally lasting, though allergies still need management.

Do I need it with septoplasty?

Sometimes both are needed — determined at exam.
